When it comes to confusing or controversial books of the bible there’s nothing quite like the book of Revelation. No other book is considered as enigmatic and mysterious and no other book has been quite so misunderstood or misrepresented. Though the book sometimes solicits fear it is in fact the only book in the bible that says we are blessed if we read it. This is why at Access Theology we’re going to tackle the big one as we look at Revelation and the End.
Whereas the gospels show Jesus in his humanity it is only in the book of Revelation where we see him in his full glory. This alone makes it an exciting book as we see Jesus as he truly is: THE KING OF KINGS AND THE LORD OF LORDS. Revelation is Jesus Christ’s message to the church in a time of persecution. He shows them how God is in control of human history and reveals to them what must take place before his Second Coming. Throughout the Old and New Testament we have a scatter gun of information concerning what will happen at the end. However it is only in the book of Revelation that these threads are brought together into a clear narrative. It is in this book that we see how Jesus will take back dominion of the earth whilst executing judgement on the unbelieving world. The events of Revelation show the fulfilment of biblical prophecy that culminates with the Second Coming of Christ. When Christ returns he will set up the kingdom of God upon the earth and usher in the Messianic age. With this comes the final judgement of humanity followed by the creation of a New Heaven and a New Earth. The end is a picture of the new creation where God finally makes his dwelling amongst his people having dealt with evil once and for all. For the first hearers as today Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega who declares the end from the beginning. Revelation assures us of the final victory where our suffering will be vindicated and our salvation completed. This book brings with it hope and gives us confidence to persevere with the gospel despite the circumstances we encounter. Ultimately our labours will not be in vain as all the world will see that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Across this course we will be focussing on the End Times a subject that is known in theology as Eschatology (the study of the end). To do this we will predominantly focus on the book of Revelation. As we go through this book we will look at the circumstance of writing and who theoriginal audience were. We will also consider how the book has been understoodboth in its original context and over the centuries of interpretation. The book of Revelation is considered Apocalyptic in Genre, so as we go we will be expounding what exactly this means and unpacking the prophetic symbolism that appears throughout. Our hope is that this course will equip you to read through the book of Revelation with new clarity and give you the confidence to better engage and understand it.
